Are you tired of spending hours on social media promoting your brand, your books?
What if I told you there was a way to give you two-and-a-half years of writing time inside of your already busy schedule?
You see we all struggle with busy schedules, most importantly, finding time to write. Well, guess what?
I have found a way to give myself an extra hour of writing time each and every day. Writing time that I had previously squandered by over exerting myself marketing my brand and my writing.
Social Media has become the independent author’s best friend. It’s how we spread the word on our latest projects, it's how we find new readers, it's how we query for agents, it's the lifeblood of an author platform. This is the focus of every indie, self-published author right out the gate. It also happens to be where most of us stumble and fall hardest.
You spend countless hours crafting tweets, fabulous Facebook posts, and the best #instafire photo and only gain two "valuable" readers after putting in twenty hours into social media that week.
I know what you are thinking...
I know I’ve heard it! But the thing is, you inadvertently do. Most don’t know how much time we are spending on social media because the revolution of the internet has radically changed our world. It is the new norm. We get lost in the scroll, hunting and searching for the quick burst of dopamine that says, “Yes, I have been validated and accepted by my peers!”
For indie authors it is no different. We wait for the next follow, the next share by our friends and family that puts another stone in the stronghold of our author platform. Unfortunately some of us spend far too much time surfing the social media waves for too little return on our investment. In fact recent estimates say that the average social media user will spend over five years of their life on social media.

#DIGIHACK - Digital Marketing for the Self-Published Author: OptimizeMySite a tool to help build your Author Brand!
Ok Readers, Get a Load of This...
I've been talking to you about how to build your Author Platform/Brand in the WTH Do You Do Next Blog Series and I have come across a nifty tool that is of some serious use! This particular hack is useful to those of you who will be building a website and those of you who already have one and I can't wait to show you how to use it.
So Let's Get To It!
I came across this tool while researching and studying methods that successful indie authors and top-notch digital marketers grabbed their customers attention. I was directed to it through a course I am taking The Complete Digital Marketing Course via Udemy by the uber talented Daragh Walsh. Thus far the course has been incredibly eye-opening to me particularly in learning the ropes of Search Engine Optimization. This is an area that I have struggled with in the past and so I decided I was going to nip that in the bud right away. In order to do that I needed to know what was working and what wasn't on my primary soapbox (www.christopherleeauthor.com)
That is where OptimizeMySite.com comes in!
This tool allows you to see your strengths and weaknesses in regards to SEO, Google Search Rankings, Keywords, Copy, Social Media Traffic, Mobile Stats, Page Size and Load time, and infinitely more. For a free account you are able to input your website URL and scan it for one keyword to see how your site is setup in regards to that particular keyword. Now hang tight, I will explain why all of these are going to matter for you as an Indie Author as we go along.
The Best Part This Tool Starts Out Free
There are up-gradable options that allow you to search additional keywords for a monthly fee, however, I suggest getting your feet wet with the free tool first and see how you like it. If you are like me than you will certainly like the ADDITIONAL HACK at the end of this post.
I want to show you a few key aspects of the report
Right up front you can see some key metrics that are going to help you in pulling in new readers, customers, and reads for your blog. I used the keyword author as a first example, it is a simple keyword that exemplifies my brand and what I am trying to achieve so I wanted to see how what I already have in place reflects that.
Instantly I can see I have more Optimization problems than I do what OptimizeMySite calls "Good Signals"
These "Good Signals" are areas where my page is performing well enough to pass their rigorous report card. So far I have 24 wins, but a lot of work and that is OK. Let's see what areas (www.christopherleeauthor.com) can use improvement.
In this screen grab you can see one of the most helpful features on board the OptimizeMySite tool, a side by side comparison of a competitor. Now as an Indie Author you might be thinking, I don't have any competitor's, and you would be wrong. We are all competing for the eyes of readers, and though it is a common and good practice to help each other gain visibility, it is also just as imperative that you learn every edge you can from those who are more successful than you are. In this case I took a look at Nat Russo's page erindorpress.com (Which I Highly Recommend taking a peek at and Following him on Twitter)
Nat Russo, author of Necromancer Falling is a best-selling Amazon author whose readers I would like to attract to my page and my book. So I want to see exactly what he is doing, what keywords he uses, where his traffic comes from, and how he is driving traffic to his Author Platform/Brand at erindorpress.com
In the image above you can see that for the keyword, author, we are pretty evenly matched, so that is a win in my book. As we continue down though there are quite a few areas where erindorpress.com is outperforming my page.
In particular page loading time...
Now you wouldn't think right off the bat that his matters, but it is absolutely crucial to have a fast loading page. So now I know that Nat's page is loading a full four seconds faster than mine. That is a huge advantage! So I have identified a place where I can work to better my platform right away in less than a minute.
Now here is where OptimizeMySite.com Shines
As you can see above they have videos that teach you methods or areas you can improve the particular metric that you are falling behind with. This is HUGE! Considering how cramped for time we already are as authors it is imperative that we have quick, easy solutions to these problems. For me as a DIY kind of guy I don't want to pay someone to do this. I want to know how to do it, to increase my value and to increase my advantage in capturing the attention of potential customers.
The metrics keep on coming...
I can see where a portion of Nat's traffic is coming from or going to. In this case I can see that his site is connecting and performing much better than mine with Facebook. So I have just identified another area of improvement.
I can also start to identify potential keywords to use within the SEO of my page. Yet another advantage, and all of this data for FREE! That is an insanely helpful hack for authors on a tight budget. Any edge you can find, use it, exploit it, and watch as your audience grows. All you have to do is put in the leg work, or in the case of following my progress on this blog, follow in my footsteps!
This tool is one that every indie author needs to have in their tool belt. Even though it is a fairly advanced tool, that may be beyond your current level of expertise, I encourage you to tinker around with it. Check out the stats coming off of your blog, website, etc. The only thing you are going to gain from this is a positive.
Oh don't go just yet...There is another Hack you can benefit from...
After taking a good look at the tool I received an email from OptimizeMySite. They are looking for people to write up a potential blog about their tool, in exchange for a year of free, upgraded service with their tool. This is a huge opportunity to increase the exposure to your blog via the review and at the same time get a bonus year of free analysis on your website. So get to it! As always if you have any questions feel free to comment, DM, get at me through all of the many avenues of social media. I'm here to help.
